What Is a Dental Emergency?

Examples of instances that require immediate dental care include:

• A broken tooth.
• Severe bleeding from the mouth as a result of trauma to the mouth area.
• Swollen jaw due to a dental abscess.
• Wisdom tooth pain.
• Severe tooth pain that prevents you from partaking in normal activities.

Treatment Steps

During your emergency dental appointment, your dentist will cover one or more of the following steps:

1. Thorough examination of the affected area. Dental X-rays/digital photographs may be needed to analyse the extent of the damage.
2. Your dentist will propose the treatment needed to reverse your symptoms/any damage. This may need to be performed at a future appointment, though in some cases treatment such as fillings and extractions can sometimes be performed on the same day.
3. Prescription antibiotics in cases where a dental infection is severe.

If you have to undergo an extraction, your dentist may advise that you come and see us for a missing tooth consultation. Replacing extracted teeth with dental implants is an extremely worthwhile undertaking for your dental health. If you have had wisdom teeth extracted, these do not require tooth replacement.
